The smile design is the specialty of aesthetic dentistry which should be customized. For a more beautiful smile, there are many factors that are effective in the smile design that men and women often prefer. In addition to the gender of the patient, age, face shape, socio-economic status, even the profession is important. The purpose of this process is to obtain a permanent and natural smile.

How do personal characteristics affect smile design ?

Gender : The lateral incisor teeth next to the front two teeth are shaped according to the sex of the person. These teeth are more rounded and inside in women, and are sharper and more pronounced in men.

Age : The length, shape and whiteness of the teeth are directly related to age. Especially the structure of the front two teeth is that shows the age of the person.

Skin : Natural tooth and gum colour is personal and compatible with skin colour. It is particularly important to choose the appropriate tooth colour in a natural design.

Face shape : It is very important that the teeth are compatible with the facial features. It is not appropriate to make round-shaped teeth to someone with angular facial features. Features such as lip thickness and distance between the two lips are effective in determining the smile design.

Such factors are effective when creating the smile design and it is also important how the patient wants to look.  While most patients want to have a natural smile, some patients may want their teeth to attract attention. Off course, this treatment’s purpose is to create compatible and natural smile with patient’s mouth, make them happy, and make smile them with confident and to that provide maximum benefit.

Methods of Smile design

Mock-up : It’s the method that provide that the patients can see the result of the treatment. It is seen that the wax teeth formed on the plaster prepared with the measurements taken will be inserted into the patient’s mouth and the planned design will be seen. The necessary changes can be made on these teeth; the teeth may remain in the mouth of the patient for 1-2 days.

Digital design with photograph: In the clinic, the dentist takes a picture of the patient and the teeth are formed through the photo. In the modelling, dentists make all desired changes in the teeth and they will readied for the design.

Placement of the teeth

In the placement of the teeth, it is ensured that the teeth conform to the symmetry at the level of a vertical line from the middle of the face to the forehead, nose tip and chin line. The parallelism of the cut teeth with the pupils is important in the horizontal plane.

It should be noted that the alignment of the teeth, with a certain decrease from the front to the back, should be paid attention. The “golden ratio” that we see everywhere in nature also applies to the smile design.

The colour of the teeth is very important in the smile design. The dentist chooses the colour according the patient’s features. Colour changes due to the natural characteristics of the tooth and a more transparent structure provides a natural look. Asymmetric, discoloured or darkened teeth affect the smile design. Such problems may require treatment for gums. The sole purpose of all these practices is to successfully renew the smile of the patient, which affects the psychology of the patient as well.
